You've never gone island hopping quite like this. And if you have, you know how great it would be to do it twice. Rome gets this voyage started and St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museum, and Sistine Chapel are a must. After three days in the Italian countryside, you'll arrive for an overnight on the island of Malta, in the capital Valletta. A tiny city, surrounded by massive honey-colored limestone walls, it has a lot to protect - Caravaggio's famous "Beheading of St. John the Baptist" is in the cathedral here, the only painting Caravaggio ever signed (in the blood from St. John's throat). But you must also look down; the floor is inlaid marble, depicting the coats of arms of the knights buried underneath.

You'll also stay overnight on the island of Menorca. Azamara's smaller size enables the ship to sail down the canal into the city of Mahon. The top deck offers a great view of this striking cliffside city as we approach the harbor. Striking, too, is the organ in the Church of Santa Maria, as is the church itself. The beaches, though, are where you'll want to be. The water is almost translucent; Punta Prima is one to try. After sunset, there's a club that's actually a series of interconnecting caves up a cliff which makes for the perfect evening activity. Sip your pomada, a drink of local gin mixed with cold, sweet lemon soda, and watch the sun dip into the hugeness of the Mediterranean. The island life never felt better.

Conclude your voyage in Barcelona. Though not an island, this seaside gem of the Mediterranean will not disappoint.
